Feminism is for everyone bell hooks5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() As such, it requires a commitment to restructure society to one that prioritizes people over profit. ![]() is necessarily a struggle to eradicate the ideology of domination that permeates Western culture” (hooks 1984, 24). Hooks defined feminism as “a struggle to end sexist oppression. This is the feminism bell hooks articulated so well. But the feminism I know and love works toward the transformation of systems of domination and oppression to a world of justice, solidarity, and love. Popular misconceptions of feminism have miscast feminism as a hatred of men, a resentful complaint, and/or a desire for equal access to power and position in the patriarchal, capitalist hierarchy. ![]() This was the message I had found so compelling in the work of other resistance writers and in my own deep desire for justice in the world. These words, and her recognition of love as the defining quality of feminism, resonated with me immediately and drew me deeply to her work. In her groundbreaking essay “Feminism: A Transformational Politic,” bell hooks boldly declares, “Embedded in the commitment to feminist revolution is the challenge to love” (hooks 1989, 26). This essay is part of our online special issue honoring bell hooksīell hooks: Feminism as the Transformational Work of Love ![]()

The american queen book5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() She moved easily between the worlds of high fashion, adorning herself in the most regal Parisian gowns, and politics, managing her father's presidential campaigns. To facilitate that goal, she married one of the richest men in the country, the handsome boy governor" of Rhode Island, in the social event of the Civil War. As her widowed father's hostess, she set up a rival court" against Mary Lincoln in hopes of making her father president and herself his First Lady. Chase, Lincoln's treasury secretary, Kate Chase enjoyed unprecedented political power for a woman. Had People magazine been around during the Civil War and after, Kate Chase would have made its Most Beautiful" and Most Intriguing" lists every year. ![]() Hardback The Rise and Fall of Kate Chase Sprague-Civil War "Belle of the North" and Gilded Age Woman of Scandal ![]() Redemption in Indigo by Karen Lord5/13/2023 ![]() Marquez overwhelms you with vivid details while Lord is brief and concise. Magic-realism is usually associated with (but not limited to) Gabriel Garcia Marquez yet in many ways, Lord's writing is the complete opposite. But that assumes there is a rigid formula and set of tropes that can easily be mimicked or identified-or that such interpretations is common across all cultures. There is both value and valid criticism with the term and it's easy to pigeonhole works like Redemption in Indigo as falling under that sub-genre in much the same way a lot of Philippine fiction like the fiction of Dean Francis Alfar or Joy Dayrit can be described as such. Take for example another problematic definition: magic-realism. In a lot of way, this novel by Karen Lord captures a lot of what I want to discuss when it comes to World SF (a problematic term, I know, but it's what I have to work with right now without delving into a longer discussion, so bear with me). ![]() ![]() I received a copy of Redemption in Indigo from Small Beer Press last year but didn't read it immediately. ![]() The worst years of my life book5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() First off, the character Carl (aka Bear) in the movie is so much nicer than in the book. This is a 14 year old's opinion: This is an utter disgrace to James Patterson for the original book. Would recommend and all four of the kids really enjoyed it :) ![]() It's hard to find movies that aren't a complete bore to watch with the kids, so this was a winner in my book.Īwesome soundtrack, sweet and wholesome light romance, funny but not too gross potty and slapstick humor, and not really any swearing. I was uncomfortable with the young girl taking the car for a joyride, but its not enough to put me off the movie. There were a few moments could have done without, like the "hot" stepmom mention, and the step dad chasing after the waitress but overall they kept everything very PG. I loved the style of bringing the drawings to life and mixing the reality with imagination. Understandably, this might be difficult to watch for kids that have lost loved ones so good to keep that in mind. I didn't see the sixth sense plot twist coming, but felt it added to the story line and character depth. The tween love interest was smart, caring, ambitious and interesting (not just pretty). The main characters were all really likeable and there were a likeable bunch of adult actors I recognised. ![]() I really enjoyed watching this movie with my 9yo and 7 yo daughters plus 8yo niece and 11yo nephew. ![]() V Is for Vegan by Ruby Roth5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() A separate section entitled What Else Can We Do? suggests ways children can learn more about the vegetarian and vegan lifestyles, such as: 'Celebrate Thanksgiving with a vegan feast' or 'buy clothes, shoes, belts, and bags that are not made from leather or other animal skins or fur'. "That's Why We Don't Eat Animals" makes the case sensitively for both vegetarianism and veganism with gorgeous artwork and a clear, firm stance about the needs of animals and the peril to the greater environment. While the message is sobering and serious, animals are also shown in their natural state rooting around, bonding, nuzzling, cuddling, grooming one another, and generally charming each other with their family instincts and colourful rituals. Pigs, turkeys, cows, and even quails, dolphins, and turtles take the stage to exhibit with unflinching candour the conditions animals face on factory farms. Targeted to early readers ages six to ten, Ruby Roth's nonfiction book presents a showcase of brilliant illustrations featuring animals both in their natural, fulfilling setting and then in cramped, factory-farm misery, to carry the clear, firm message of veganism's virtue. ![]() Bel canto patchett5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() While at first Patchett's tone seems oddly flippant and detached, it soon becomes apparent that this light note is an introduction to her main theme, which is each character's cathartic experience. As the days drag on, their initial anguish and fear give way to a kind of complex domesticity, as intricately involved as the melodies Roxane sings during their captivity. ![]() The hostages, winnowed of all women except Roxane, whose voice beguiles her captors, are from many countries their only common language is a love of opera. Determined to fulfill their demands, the rough, desperate guerrillas settle in for a long siege. The president, however, has not attended the concert, which is a birthday tribute in honor of a Japanese business tycoon and opera aficionado. Celebrated American soprano Roxane Coss has just finished a recital in the home of the vice-president of a poor South American country when terrorists burst in, intent on taking the country's president hostage. This fluid and assured narrative, inspired by a real incident, demonstrates her growing maturity and mastery of form as she artfully integrates a musical theme within a dramatic story. ![]() As her readers now eagerly anticipate, Patchett ( The Magician's Assistant) can be counted on to deliver novels rich in imaginative bravado and psychological nuance. ![]() When twilight burns by colleen gleason5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Meanwhile, her heart is still divided between the enigmatic Sebastian Vioget and her fellow slayer Max Pesaro. Random Acts of Grace by Paul Johnson5/13/2023 ![]() In Romans 6, Paul answers these two questions. Question #2: “ Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace?” (Romans 6:15) Question #1: “ Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase?” (Romans 6:1) Therefore, Paul poses two major questions: He also teaches in Romans 6 that we are not under law, but under grace. In Romans 5, Paul teaches the law (Ten Commandments) was given to increase sin, and the more sin increased, the more grace increased (Romans 5:20). ![]() The questions Paul posed in Romans 6, and answers he gives to each question, were probably typical questions he was asked and answers he gave as he shared the good news of grace. Romans 6 is a continuation of Romans 5 and contains answers to several hypothetical questions Paul asks as follow up questions from Romans 5. To properly interpret and understand Romans 6, it is critical to understand Romans 1-5. “ What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase?” ![]() ![]()
